Doubt everything. Find your own light. ― Gautama Buddha
The existence of religion has formed and spread all around parts of the world ever since the birth of civilization. Some people think that religions are beliefs in mythological figures resulting from ancestral influence and traditional legacy in the mind and the soul of mankind. However, such belief is only a limited edition focusing on a drop of water within an entire ocean. Through the pages of history, religion plays an essential philosophical role and is capable of generating many consequences that could not be forgotten.
Religion assists the world in the process of uncovering its history. This refers to the fact that many of the world’s oldest historical objects are based on religious perspectives. To illustrate, Angkor Wat, the largest Hinduism temple in the world, was built in the twelfth century in Cambodia as an honor of Hindu Gods. At the time, people thought that such complex site would help their king become God once he entered the afterlife. However, the building did so much more than “literally” turning someone divine. It has formed endless wars between Cambodia and its envious neighbor countries for eight decades, burning down the city of Angkor in 1431. In addition, it is an evidence that Cambodia has existed for a great number of decades, according to engraved surface of its walls, even before the monument itself. On top of that, it is speculated that number zero in mathematical abstraction is derived from this particular building . History would be faded away without such supreme verification because these events are something humans can easily take for granted.
Religion helps humanity bring back its logical sense and reasoning. After approximately a century of suffering within the emptiness of the Middle Ages, some religious artworks and paintings from the Renaissance Period establish a style for this rebirth period of art. It is true that the Black Death is possibly the fundamental factor “why” mankind can escape the Medieval Period; however, religion is the element of “how” to escape such dark age. If painting from Renaissance is inspected, anybody can easily tell that the artwork is inspired by Christianity. For example, De Vinci’s Last Supper in 1495 signifies that Christ is the most important figure in the painting due to the geometrical symmetry that enables him to stay in the middle of everything. Renaissance is an explosion of Christian Art, and Christianity religion boosts confidence in major figures throughout history to redeem humanity.
Religion inspires human’s creativity and utility to new innovation that changes the world. This means that the insight of religious procedure pushes people to their fullest potential as they feel obligated to invent something new. An example of this would be the Hebrew Astrolabe in 1345, “not just a scientific instrument, but also an emblem of a very particular moment in Europe’s religious and political history” , which functions as the fourteenth century Blackberry: timekeeping, astrology, surveying, and more. This particular object is a representation of combination of religions and science that Muslim, Jewish, and Christian scholars have worked together in order to produce. It has also been stated these people tried to reveal something about the roots of ancient Greece’s scientific success that has been lost within the flying time . Either it has been made in Spain or Southern France, Hebrew Astrolabe can be compared to the invention of computer, however early. Back in 1345, common sense still believed in Geocentric Model of the universe, and it is a wonder that they had this device showing the movement of the stars in cosmos already. If it was not for the Spain monarchy that prosecuted and expelled Muslims and Jews from Spain, what the combination of these religions can do would be unbelievable to our modern world.
Religion stimulates individuals to question the authority and stand up for what is right. When printing press was invented in 1450s by Johann Gutenberg, he decided to translate the Bible and print it with aesthetic beauty that could not be ignored . Consequently, this resulted in weakened power of Roman Catholic Church as every person can then have access to a copy of the Bible and, therefore, began to question the fact that the Church held too much power and distorted the information in the book. Printing Press is the birth of publishing and sharing work openly in the purpose to avoid tyranny and thrive for the act of Reformation towards the new world with freedom and equality. Without this event in history, the Church would have all the rights to control mankind and the world today would feasibly be doing what we are told like robots in line.
Religion forms faith that lead followers to true happiness in life. This means that even though some of the rules might not make sense, it could be a warning or a requirement that followers must do together for the better. To be specific, one of Muslims’ most unyielding rules is not to consume pork. This might not make sense to the others, but perhaps Muslims had the reason to do so. The spread of this particular religion is in the seventh century of common era where hospital services were not provided and physicians were limited. During that time, people did not know much about health and sanitation except that God knows what is best for his followers. Pigs were “unclean” due to the fact that it contains too many parasites and viruses that might spread and kill. Furthermore, pigs are being raised in terrible condition. They eat every kind of food even bugs, and, therefore, need so much care that Muslim Nomads may not have time to bother. Despite the fact that Muslims have strong faith in God, it is possible that “God” is trying to keep them safe with better sanitation.
In conclusion, religion plays major roles in shaping what we are and who we are today. The fact that religion is only seeking what is best for its followers can sometimes be ignored as humans like to think that there is superpower to assist them behind their back if they follow certain rules. Such belief can also be beneficial as it is crucial for humans to draw a line between what they should and should not do. Religion has done so much: recording history, maintaining logic, creating modern devices, fighting for virtue, seeking happiness and more. Across the forgotten pages of history, it is perhaps religion that keeps humans together in a society of unity and prosperity. After all, each religion only aims to accomplish one goal: happiness.
